Orthodontics is the field of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of improperly positioned teeth and jaws.
Teeth that do not fit together properly or that are crooked are harder to maintain and keep clean. They are therefore at a higher risk of developing decay or periodontal disease, which can result in the loss of teeth. Additionally, improperly positioned teeth can cause stress on the chewing muscles, resulting in conditions such as TMJ disorder, headaches, or neck, shoulder, and back pain. Receiving orthodontic treatment, then, is not only cosmetically beneficial in providing a better smile, but also protects teeth and helps them last longer.
Orthodontics can be used to treat such dental problems as:
At Katy Smiles Center, we offer traditional braces and braces with clear brackets to address your orthodontic issues. Traditional braces consist of individual brackets, which are attached to each tooth. An archwire attached to the brackets constantly asserts a gentle pressure on the teeth, shifting them into the desired position. Metal braces are strong and have the advantage of not staining teeth. Clear brackets are made with a clear synthetic material and “tooth-colored” ceramic, making them less conspicuous in the mouth. They can be more comfortable than traditional metal brackets, but are more susceptible to discoloration from food and drink. Once treatment is completed, a retainer will be required to maintain the new position of the teeth.
